NORTH BEACH's Telegraph Hill Landslide Forces 120 Families From Homes

~~~~~~
We live three blocks from Telegraph Hill where the landslide happened Tuesday morning at around 3 AM.
Husband and I had no clue about this disaster. We both found out about it yesterday from our friends who emailed us, individually, out of concern. Just then at mid morning around 10 A.M. that I got to know about this terrible news. The night before, were watching the hail then were sleeping peacefully. At around 3 AM, the land slide happened. What a mess. It made my heart to beat so fast upon seeing the photos online and upon reading the news below. We are deeply sorry to those people who are affected by this turmoil.
TELEGRAPH HILL is the highest hill in North Beach. From where we live, at the main street (Union), you can see how high it is. It's such a beautiful site but a dangerous place to live in, I just realized this now. This is where the famous COIT TOWER is located.
The hundreds of tons of rock that broke loose Tuesday from a slope in San Francisco's North Beach will take weeks to clean up, and it probably will be months before the hillside is made safe and the 120 residents driven from their homes can return, city officials said.
Seven buildings were rendered uninhabitable when a 75-foot-wide chunk of Telegraph Hill slid down a granite and sandstone slope above Broadway about 3:30 a.m. Among the buildings that city officials declared off-limits was a 45-unit condominium complex at 455 Vallejo St. perched at the edge of the newly formed cliff.
City officials speculated that recent heavy rains had triggered the slide, which did not cause any injuries.
A concrete patio connected to the condo building was in danger of falling Tuesday evening, along with several large rocks nearby, said officials with the city Department of Building Inspection. The building's structural integrity was unknown, and residents were not allowed to return.
Also red-tagged and declared uninhabitable were three apartment buildings on Montgomery Street on the slide's east side and three buildings on Broadway, including the Broadway Showgirls Cabaret strip club.
The nightclub's manager, Ian Cabungcal, said the slide had demolished his office. "If I'd been there at the time, I'd have been dead," he said. "There is a rock the size of a Volkswagen in the middle of my office." Building Inspection officials said the slide had occurred on private land and that the owners of the seven affected properties were responsible for removing the 30-foot pile of rocks and stabilizing the hill.
They told the condominium building's owners that they needed to hire a contractor to remove the concrete and loose rock that engineers considered to be in imminent danger of collapsing. But by late Tuesday, the owners had failed to reach an agreement on how to deal with the problem.
Police, fire and building officials said the situation could take weeks to resolve. A geologist retained by the city to assess the condition of the rock face could have a report by this morning, they said.
"We have to remove a lot of sections (of rock) that are loose and come up with a long-term solution, and that takes a lot of engineers," said Carla Johnson, deputy director of the Building Inspection Department.
Contractors who viewed the slide Tuesday said they doubted residents would return soon.
Ryan Nagle of Drill Tech in Antioch, which did work for Caltrans to strengthen a rock wall on Devil's Slide after storms damaged Highway 1 last year, said the hillside that slid Tuesday will probably need structural support to prevent further collapses. To install such support, workers will need to drill 2-inch-thick rebar steel poles into the rock, a job that easily could take crews working around the clock, seven days a week a month to complete, Nagle said.
"The work is a pain ... to do here because a crane parked on Broadway or Montgomery Street needs to go over the top of buildings (facing the street) and suspend guys in a basket to do the drilling," Nagle said.
After inserting the rebar in a grid about every 5 feet along the rock face, workers would pour a concrete-like substance to seal in the earth, he said.
Taking away the pile of rocks at the base of the slide also will require a crane that will have to be parked on Broadway, Montgomery or Vallejo plus dump trucks to haul away the debris, contractors said.
"We'd need to use slings and netting or steel chokes to lift the boulders out, and we'd have to suspend them over the buildings to do it," said Thomas Hart, a manager with Sheedy Drayage Co.
In addition to the immediate need to remove the unstable concrete slab from the back of the Vallejo Street property and nearby loose rocks, the entire slide area will need to be contained until work can start, said Michael "Mac" McLaughlin, who works for Granite Excavation and Demolition Inc. of San Francisco.
"There's fissures in those rocks and loose rock suggesting that more could fall," McLaughlin said. "They'll probably net it, cover it in plastic, use some sandbags and put a chain link fence around it." While preparations were under way to fix the damage, residents driven from their homes pondered their next moves.
On Broadway, about two dozen displaced people sat inside a Muni bus that was temporarily parked as a shelter in front of their homes. They sipped coffee and ate chocolate doughnuts from a Red Cross wagon. Others spent the day on cots inside a Red Cross shelter set up in a gym on Mason Street.
"I was watching TV when I heard a boom, boom -- twice. Two booms,'' said Steve Liu, who has lived for 10 years in a flat at 432 Broadway. "At first I thought it was an earthquake. It was scary. There were rocks everywhere. Big rocks. Forty-pound rocks, a foot across."
Liu said a retaining net was strung along part of the hillside to catch smaller pieces of debris a few years ago.
"They must have put it there for a reason," he said.
Mark Loftin and his bulldog, Boss, were asleep in their condo at 455 Vallejo when the slide occurred. A police officer banging on their front door was their first notice that something was wrong.
"The officer said, 'Get your clothes, get your car and get out," Loftin said. "There was a lot of commotion but no panic."
Loftin, who bought his unit two years ago, said he was satisfied at the time by inspectors' reports that said the hillside was solid.
"When you move into a place on a cliff, you're aware of the movies and the horror stories about all the worst things that can happen," he said. "But I was told this was some of the most solid rock in the city."
Resident manager Anne White, who owns a condo in the Vallejo Street building, said the homeowners association had the hillside shored up about five years ago after some rocks fell. A geologist who surveyed the area recently suggested that the neighbors on Montgomery and Broadway do further work, she said.
The geologist also said, however, that no reinforcement work could be done until after the rainy season, White said.
Owners of other buildings declared off-limits because of the slide said they had no inkling the hill was dangerous.
Peter Chin owns two of the red-tagged buildings, at 426 and 432 Broadway, which between them have 13 apartments and two restaurants. He bought them in August and said the previous owners had told him the hillside was city property.
"I saw on the other side of the rock formation, they had put nets and stuff like that," Chin said. "And my understanding was that the city was going to do that on my side."
Chin said he does not believe his insurance will pay for the repairs to his buildings or the cost of shoring up the hill.
Joe Carouba, who purchased Showgirls just two months ago, also isn't sure whether he'll have to pay out of his own pocket.
"I sure hope my insurance covers it, but I honestly don't know," he said. "We just closed on the place."
HAIL TO THE WORLD!
It rained last night. I could not believe it! There was also lightning and thunder! And then the rain started to get strong I said to moi husband,
“Wow! It is like being home in the tropics! I miss the monsoon rain!”
Well then, we continued watching cable TV when all of a sudden, the sound got so loud, husband almost jumped out of bed to check out what was happening outside. At the veranda with the sliding door slightly opened, he called me and said,
“It’s hail! It is hail! Come over here! It is not your ordinary rain. Look at the little icicles!”
Hm, I thought the little boy in him came out again. He was ecstatic! His laughter was in staccato.
I ran (not wanting to lose the momentum of his delight) and saw it…the icy little thing, popping out like pop corn from the skies; dancing to our pavement in the veranda then getting dribbled back elsewhere. This rhythmic pattern made the sound so loud. We watched it for several minutes. For a second, I ran to the cupboard in our kitchen, got a Styrofoam cup, and told Little Boy Blue that I wanted it to be filled with hail. I meant the virgin ones coming from the skies, not the ones already conglomerating in our veranda. Ha! Anyhow, after enjoying this magical moment, we got back to our bedroom and watched Dr. Phil’s “Man Hunt” edition. In bed, I thought of my mini garden here in the city. I felt sad for my plants after the hailstorm. They looked scared and traumatized. Kawawa (pitiful).
My mums are flowering right now but due to this sudden hail, one got bended and tilted, I need to cut it today. The umbrella plants are okay but somehow their pots and soil were covered with ice. I was thinking, gosh, tomorrow, they would wither and their leaves would get slimy, black, and yucky. Eeks!
This morning, the sun is up and the skies are blue. We will have a good day. Presently, I have not completely decided yet on when would I start planting my begonias, morning glory, and other spring flowers for the springtime. I guess I need to wait a little more time and make it easy on myself. I would do it once the first day of March comes through. After all, it is not much of a time to wait as it is just a few more days from now. I have to be patient. I just love springtime!
Celebrating Friendship At Home
Our friends came by last night and had dinner with us. They thought we were eating at the bistro somewhere but no, I prepared broiled salmon marinated in Kosher salt and rosemary, sautead asparagus, capers and lemon. I also served baked eggplant parmeggiano and steamed rice. For dessert, we had almond chocolate biscotti, served with hot brewed coffee. In between dinner and dessert, we had white wine for the ladies and beer for the gentlemen. For antipasto, I prepared edam cheese, fresh mushroom, blue cheese, brie, sliced oranges and garlic baguette. After dinner, we walked to our neightborhood and enjoyed the music and drinks at the Condor bar; danced for a bit then headed back home; chatted a bit more then walked down to the street; escorted them to the parking lot and said adieu. It was raining last night and we were blown by the wind! We walked fast and were in bed by eleven MN. We watched some "Law and Order" series.
It was nice to be visited by a friend from yester years (we were posted together in Bangkok). She came with her spouse. They live in Oakland and are a wonderful couple; volunteered to build houses in Brazil in the summer. This gf of mine was the one who gifted me with a piano when I got engaged to Little Boy Blue. She brought orange tulips for me. Too bad, my digital camera chip is missing, I can't take photos these days. LBB's camera is broken. So it's just not our week to have photos you know. Bye!
Watching The Oscars In Bed
Husband digitally recorded the Oscars. Half way through it, we watched with excitement while the recording was on-going. We were able to fast forward it which was cool since we need not deal with its gazillion of ads. Wow! The suspense came through the finale part when the recording box popped up in the screen and in it was written, "ready for deletion." My goodness! We have not even seen yet the best actor/actress awards portion and boom! The recording was over. Ouch! I had to get out of bed and click the "winners" at the Oscars' website.
So far, it was worth the time spending our Sunday in bed, watching this much-awaited event of the year in Hollywood, watched via satellite globally. Voila, Jennifer Hudson came out as the best supporting actress winner. Her rise to fame is fast. And she deserves it I think. I bet, Oprah would celebrate with her as well and with the best actor award that went to the Whitaker actor, who is black. As Halle Berry once said, she celebrated her winning an Oscar with much gusto and deliverance since she represented, she said the "people of color." Bow! Can Caucasian actors say, "We celebrate our being whites in Hollywood!" You bet, they'd be branded as "racist." Funny, the blacks can say all they want but the whites cannot. Such is the irony of life. Until next blog, good night!
Giving Away Some Very Useful Furniture
This evening, we brought out the furniture we had no use for at this point in time. Last year in June these came with us upon our relocation here from Ripon. Today, we have no use for these for lack of space in our living quarters. We downsized to the maxim. We moved the bureau and dresser from our bedroom to the living room and made an improvisation in matters of interior design. So far so good. All blended well. So these items in photos here were those we brought downstairs and set up neatly along Union. Here in the city, everything goes fast, even the recipient of serendipity! The moment we have sorted out the hutch, mirror, and the upright wrought iron cabinet, 6 to 8 people started to come and checked them out. Before we left to return to our alley, a middle aged Caucasian man has carried away the large mirror we left behind just minutes ago. It was good. We did not want the stuffs to stay on the street for a long time.
Since living here in North Beach last year, we have given away a lot of kitchen appliances, gadgets, and furniture if only to make our space livable and convenient for us to move around. We could have given them to our friends but our time is limited to wait for their pick up date. Sometimes, the moving of furniture is a hassle so we just thought of dumping them on the street. Even when we were living in the suburbs, we did the same thing, especially a week before we moved here. We had much stuff that we had given away for good and we are happy to have done that because we had no intention of renting a storage just for that. We are a practical couple, the lesser weight we have the better in terms of stuff we use.
Some people love to hoard. We do not. And I know I am lucky my partner practices the same principles as I do. I am not attached to material things and if it is time to let go, I do. This is what I learned from living overseas while posted in various international schools. Once it's time to relocate, repatriate or become an expatriate again in another country, I dispose my stuff, mostly I give away what I think others could have some use for those am not interested anymore or those I can't bring with me overseas. Shipping of personal effects abroad is very costly so I only ship the basics like my art books, piano books, framed personal paintings, clothes, shoes, souvenirs, and bric-a-brac. In international school hiring, once your contract ends, you are responsible for your shipment to your next posting. If you are hired in another international school in another country, then that school would be responsible for this. If you break your contract, you pay for it. For some other reasons, teachers pay their own shipment because it is not part of the benefits in the hiring process.
OUR NEW PURCHASE: Chrome Steel Closet Organizer, Infrared Trashbin and Interlocking Shoe Organizer
Sunday, we purchased 4 sets of chrome steel closet organizer, shoe organizer, and infrared trash bin at Costco (San Francisco). Both of us were not feeling very well but we decided we must do something about the limited space we have so impromptu, we drove to shop at Costco. Although Little Boy Blue (LBB) is still recuperating from his minor surgery, he was still able to install the stuff we bought.
He installed one of the closet organizers inside our clothes cabinet and it turned out right in terms of size and was perfect. The infrared trash bin is big but has not been installed with batteries so we are not using it yet. This is "hands free" trash bin lid and opens by infrared sensing. Hi-tech! We are replacing our new manually operated duck motif trash bin, as it is small for us. It is cute and goes with our motif but it is such a waste using our big plastic bag in it. And it does not accommodate a lot of trash inside it. The infrared one is costly but it is worth the price you pay for it. I bake and cook a lot so I need a bigger trash bin in my kitchen. I have to see how this works and am sure it should be fun for us shooting the trash in there!
By evening time, we both felt sick, tired and exhausted. We had to take pain medicine while working. LBB did the installation while I folded and hanged the clothes, cleaned the whole flat and cooked lunch. By dinnertime, all was done. We had pasta with meatballs, garlic bread with mozzarella cheese and two orders of marinara sauce that husband purchased at North Beach Pizza, our favorite pizza place right across our flat.
Living Together In Our Italian Neighborhood Called North Beach
Friday, we went to Kaiser in Geary Boulevard for his surgery. All went well and we were glad it was over. It was nothing serious, just a minor stuff that was excised from his right arm.
There, at the lobby on the second floor, I waited for him to return. While he was gone, I was obessively writing down my thoughts to cast away the worries that was embracing me like a ghost. I used my Treo phone to write my entry.
HE AND I
Last Friday as well, we had two bottles of beer each at the cafe along Grant, right across the Washington Square. It was nice, the afternoon was lovely. We were outside sipping our beer, facing the road where the bus stop is. Bus number 45 stops there and we are happy to note that. At least now we know we need not walk that far along Stockton to get to downtown bus. Sitting there at the outdoor cafe, I felt like a vagabond watching the people walked by.
We decided to hang around at this bistro for a while after we dropped off our van at the paid parking lot nearby. This is just a block away from this joint. We pay a monthly parking fee of $350.00 which is quite a sum for a parking space as a matter of fact.
REMINISCENT OF THINGS PAST
While chatting with moi husband, in the process of our conversation, it dawned on me that this was the exact place we spent our Valentine's dinner last year at this bistro (I can't recall its name). It was about that time of our life when we were falling in love immensely with San Francisco. We saw the park right across us then and thought of how nice it would be to live here all days of our lives. But can we afford? May be. We have some rentals in the suburbs, his work is good and pays well. I don't work but my career is making our life worth living for.
Back then we discovered the beauty of this place called Little Italy a.k.a. North Beach. . Each time we were here for a visit, we loved it. So the thought of living in this locality crossed our minds more than a million times may be; it made us dream, mesmerized, and be hopeful on the possibility of relocating here(despite our frustrations during our early days here in finding an apartment that suits our taste and life stye). Cost of rental in San Francisco is astronomical as you must know.
Our flat is wonderful in its simplest structure on the day we found it. As a homemaker, I immediately saw the possibilities and improvements I could do to make it even better as it is. At once, my mind was reeling with wondrous ideas on what to add unto it to make it more of a "home" than merely a house or a flat. Husband was twice as happy as I was with the idea so we agreed to sign the contract. When we arrived here, we were ready and had our checkbook with us. We expressed our interest and the Chinese landlord likewise was delighted with our desire to rent his place. He was satisfied with our credit score. The paper work was done fast and easy. No impediments whatsoever awaited us and we could only sigh with relief. Quite unexpectedly, we thought, too, was our luck that we found our turf at a time when we least expected it. To be in attendance for an open house in San Francisco is all a matter of chance. Call us lucky, I think we were.
WHERE TO GO FROM OUR END
Finding an apartment in North Beach is hard. There is the appointment time to consider and yes, there is the advertisement daily at craigslist.com that you can check out. It is tough though because this is not your typical suburban location where landlords wait for your coming at a time most convenient for you. San Francisco is so cosmopolitan and a favorite place for most people from cross-cultural groups. Thus, apartment owners and real estate brokers are snobbish and picky. And because of the ecclectic character the city with its intriguing financial district, tourist destination and multi-faceted stream of European culture in North Beach, it is a prime choice for most individuals. Any available flat for rent becomes quite in demand and has tons of applicants awaiting to be selected to rent the place. Forget about buying a flat here. It may cost you a good $1M to buy one tiny beat a'la NYC apartments. It's not practical. Moreover, in San Francisco, viewing time of apartments is done on a "first come first served basis." Imagine that. The competition is tough. The market is sizzling hot and there is no room for turtles or slow foot. They may not find one if they elect to be slow. I remember, one time we drove all the way from Ripon ( 2 1/2 hours drive to SFO) only to find out the open house was canceled impromptu. Ouch! It hurt. And this was on a weekday. We had to find a parking space (the cost for this is relatively high); we had to walk uphill and downhill and this made my heart to dum in syncopated beat. Another experience we had was this- after our long drive the next time we came here, upon reaching the apartment building, we were told the flat we wanted to see was already taken. The estate broker could have called us at least so we did not waste our time and space. But that is the trend here. Consider this a deal breaker.
WANTED: APARTMENT FOR RENT
Oddly enough, one Satuday morning in June 2006, we found our homeplace at last. We fell in love with it, the first time we set our eyes on it. It is nothing great or big not the Victorian type we both have dreamed about (nothing was available at that time). What we were hoping to rent in Nob Hill (this is not North Beach) was not available. We were destined to be in North Beach, lol. So we ended up here which turned out to be great. In North Beach, everything is here: strategic location close to everything~ marketplace (Chinatown), church (Saints Peter and Paul), park (Washington Square), tourist destination (Fisherman's Wharf, Ghiradelli Square, Pier 39, Financial District), movie theatres and access to public transport. Our place is small but cute, practical and functional. The alley where it stands is quiet and peaceful. It is in the vicinity where cafes and bistros thrive. My favorite spot is our veranda which is the bonus in finding this place. This is all so important to me since I love gardening. To see the green around me makes me come alive~ although I have strong allergies to pollen. Most plants, flowers and grass give me skin rashes and irritation. I also have allergic cough but I can deal with all these so long as the plants are kept at distance, I am fine. When I am near them, I start to sneeze, then I get itchy all over my face, eyes, nose and ears. Apart from this contaminant (laughs) ours is the perfect place to live! Looking back, all seemed remote with us being able to relocate here easily because of the circumstances that prevailed. But these days we just laugh it off. Daily, we wake up with a ray of sunshine in our hearts knowing we deserve to live here. Our place, our city neighborhood is so remarkable that it is visited by tourists from around the globe.
FRIDAY
After we hit the pizza parlor, we went home and changed clothing; moved on for another walking galore at our favorite jazz joint in the area: THE CONDOR CLUB.
Here, we had two sets of anti-pasto. His was a green salad sprinkled with chunks of blue cheese; mine was this southern sausage fried crisp and filled with overcooked brown rice, made with some spice that tasted like cat shit. CONDOR is a hit for the music lovers of jazz so forget about the food. I never liked the food here. The drinks are fine, by the way. I had my usual London dry gin and tonic. Husband on the other hand did not order any alcohol drinks. He just filled his tank with water which was good. He had several glasses of beer earlier.
CONDOR CLUB
As usual, we were the icebreaker as a couple who danced freely at the dance floor. We celebrate life so we have no sense of stage fright whatsoever.
SEX TOYS
We hit the red light district on Broadway and visited some sex shops; saw quite a bit of funny vibrators in different colors, sizes and textures. We were truly amused with the novely items for sale there from key chains to party props, lolicocks, and a million more stuff. We landed as well at the former bookstore we once visited last year and it has now been converted into the BEATNIK MUSEUM. From this point on, we decided to head home.
THE WALK
The weather was nice outside. You would not believe it's winter as it almost felt like spring. We love it, indeed, so we walked aimlessly at first then decided to follow the roads leading to our place. Once home, we raised going upstairs as we always do like kids do. Afraid to be tickled in my behind, I always run as fast as I could and he always gives me that chance to win this game. I love the man.
HOME
We went to sleep at a time unknown to both of us. We woke up this morning, smiling at about our date last night. We have not done that for a while since the advent of winter this year. In bed, we talked about our weight gain and the changing shapes of our anatomy. We are growing older as fast as those raindrops in the summer. We are all right with this but desired to walk again regularly for health reasons and for the sheer fun of doing it. We may not be spring chickens anymore but we sure know how to walk with gladness in our hearts.
How Is Your Sex Life?
Wife: (Leaning to her husband while husband reads his book in bed) "Guess what?"
Husband: "What?" (Turned his face to his beautiful wife who was wearing his white short sleeved cotton shirt) Wife: "I have no panties on!" (She was excited and titillated hoping her seduction line would end up with them having sex that night).
Husband: "Would you like to buy some?"
Wife turned red.
Wife: (She yelled at him) "So this is married life?"
HAHA! You bet, it is!
The moral: know when to seduce and when to buy your next pair of knickers!
DID THIS EVER HAPPEN TO YOU?
You're on chat with a friend, you were so engrossed and was drinking your freshly made berry shake when all of a sudden- you just kicked off the red wine glass filled with it. It stained your carpet big time and you were annoyed by it. Well, then that was what happened to me just a while back!
Yes. I was silly enough to have placed the fruit drink made by LBB on the coffee table in our sitting room. I tried to relax, sipped a bit of it then thought I could be online and chat. Why not? After all, my PC is on 24 hours a day so it should not be a problem.
What I did next was typical. I got my PC from the coffee table, put on a throw pillow on my lap, and let my PC rest on it. I do this now- this ritua, as I developed a scar-like-pinky color marks on my thighs due to the heat perforating from my PC. My antidote to this is to use the pillow perpetually before I get so drawn to writing or surfing the net. Later, I went to chat with Joy who lives in San Jose. Moments later,I got so engrossed that I forgot all about the fruit drink I have. I rested my feet on the table, near where the fruit drink was- on the left side of the coffee table, near the area where the stand lamp and the piano are located which is right across the sliding door that opens to the veranda. Anyhow, the moment I stretched my legs, surprisingly, the wine glass dropped dead; collapsed its content on the table and dripped through the carpet below. The mint green carpet with incidental floral boarder design metamorphosed into a pale pink tint all at once. Ooh-la-lah! I was an idiot not to think this could happen! Gosh! Initially, I was ok, thinking that the drink is thick enough to hold it in the glass. However, a moment later, I became ambiguous. What I dreaded most had happened next. The map of stain left a huge mess in my sitting room. All at once, I ran to the bathroom, got the Oxy powder; mixed it with water in the small water container that is actually a water dipper. In it, I stirred the chemical as fast as I could. This I did with dexterity and velocity. Et voila the concoction was ready to for my carpet! I was on my knees working on this task (*sulk*) wishing, and chanting (*pout*) that the stain would be gone (*sigh*). Well then, only time can tell. Right now, all I can is think of this day as a great day. And after all it is TGIF!
Have a nice weekend!
How Was Your Valentine?
Well, mine was fine. Just tired, I was- that is. Why? Hm... B coz I did some major spring cleaning the whole day then moi made broiled salmon served with butter and lemon plus steamed broccoli with steamed rice. Served aged wine (BV) as well. After dining, we watched TV. We decided to stay home instead of going out for a date. It was chilly outside and we felt lazy to walk around our neighborhood and be at our favorite jazz joint in North Beach. The wine we had at home was absolutely wonderful. Later, I fell asleep with a happy face; was in fact laughing as I was sipping it over dinner. Haha! You guess it right...I was tipsy! Woke up late at past seven this morning; did the usual routine of my daily activity. Did some sewing and by evening time, cooked clear soup (veggies Thai style- no spicy chili pepper) and baked English scones and made some tea. LBB came home late at around eight tonight. We watched Dr. Phil and Oprah then after a moment, I decided to do this (journal) as soon as LBB stood up and worked on his PC. Ah, surprisingly, this made me wonder why? It's almost 1 AM now-caramba! He's not nocturnal. What happened to his body clock? Ngeek! Anyhow, how was your Valentines? Was it good? Memorable? Romantic? Boring? Well, ours was lovely, relaxing, peaceful and quiet as we liked it done in our style, our way- in the privacy of our home. Wish yours was sparkling, too. Ciao!
Coming Home Tomorrow to SFO from Honolulu
I can't wait to be back in North Beach tomorrow. I'd upload more photos. Hello to all my readers!
Wednesday, February 07, 2007
Greetings from Hawaii!
Here we are at the Pipeline Beach last Sunday. We had the sun with us so we were able to have a nice tan! BTW, husband and I are going back to San Francisco this Saturday onboard Hawaiian Airline.
Today, I had a date with my gf Jeanette. We worked together as overseas teachers in Bangkok many years ago. We met at the Moana Surfer (Sheraton Hotel). We had fun and walked along Kalakua Avenue and visited several places like the International Market, local shops, signature establishments like Hermes, Cartier, Bulgari, etc. After sauntering, we paced toward the local Japanese ramen house.
There, we both had noodles and soda. The serving was big~ it could actually feed three people at least with the set meal I ordered! Tonight at around six, I came back to our hotel happy, tired but fulfilled. I was ready to drop dead in bed to sleep. ZzzzZZZZZzz!
POST SCRIPT:
Tonight as I write this blog, I was voice chatting, text chatting and webcamera viewing with my sister Balloon and her daughter Sugar Pie. In between this, we were able to connect with our cousin Ningning on a conference chat. It was cool! Half way around the world we were inter-connected via the internet. I am in Honolulu; Balloon is in Bacoor while Ningning is in Quezon city. It's a small world after all, right?
Pre-Hawaiian Overture at San Francisco International Airport
Photo above: Jeanette, in Bavaria. When she showed this to me yesterday, I was at once captivated by its composition. I took this second generation version of her picture by using the latest HP digital camera with a powerful macro lens.
PSYCHIC EXPERIENCE: CHANCE ENCOUNTER AT THE AIRPORT
Has this ever happened to you? You have been thoughtful of somebody you love and for weeks and weeks you wonder what happened to that someone after not seeing him/her for years? This happened to me. Yesterday at the airport, after husband and I passed through the first security check, this person I have been thinking about manifested right between my eyes! She saw me, smiled and hailed to the world, "We got to talk! We got to talk! We got to talk!!! She spoke with so much excitement that I wanted to jump over to be with her! I responded and said,"Yes! yes! Let's keep in touch! How are you? Where were you? Where were you posted? It's been like ten years now since we last saw each other." Amazing!
This was all happening too fast for me while I was trying to find my passport while digging through my purse. Finally found it! I turned to Little Boy Blue and said, "She's the one I was telling you about~ the girlfriend I visited in Monterey years and years ago in '97! Remember?" "Yeah!" husband, responded in glee. Finally, I submitted my passport to the airport official for inspection. After her inspection, she looked satisfied- then she opened the cordon. Whew! Thereafter, she let me in. In close proximity with Jeanette, we started chatting while we three were putting back our shoes at the airport (this is SOP in most airports since 9/11 for security clearance). At the waiting area of Hawaiian Airlines, I introduced husband and Jeanette. We had exchanged emails, phone numbers and mailing address to connect as needed. While doing this, we discovered we were flying with the same airline and were going to the same destination: HAWAII! To complete our reunion perfectly, we thought of sitting next to each other although there was a bummer: all seats are assigned ahead of time. We won't be seated together, ayayay!
FATE ORCHESTRATED OUR MEETING
"Ah, we'd work it out!" Jeanette said. With husband's blessing he decided to switch seats with me since his seat was closer to Jeanette's. Our seats were far from each other since the plane was overbooked plus we just purchased our etickets online two weeks ago (prior to our flight date). And with this meant we couldn't just make amendments about our seat plan. And only a good Samaritan could make this happen. Inside the aircraft, a young man whose seat was right across Jeanette's offered his seat to me (so Jeanette and I could talk through our journey)! He was such a sweetheart! Moreover, it was obvious to most passengers within the bracket of our seating place that our flight together was unexpected! Most of them were considerate of us thus, Jeanette and I were touched and very thankful of them. Then, a Hawaiian lady, offered her seat to me since her mother has already found a seat for them. With this grace coming together in our favor, Jeanette and I could only say it's GOOD KARMA working for us! As soon as we were seated side by side, our time spinned backwards- ten years in retro! We talked a lot about the good ol' days of us being"roving international educators" for many years. In between our chat, husband checked us out if all was okay. When we finally touched down in Honolulu we were delighted about it.
At the airport, the long march to the baggage claim was tiring but the cool breeze of the tradewinds made it all worth while. We got lost then after our second attempt to figure out the way to the baggage area (there was no sign to guide the travelers), we were at the carousel area. There, Jeanette asked if she could ride with us in our rented car and we said yes, of course! Why not? We gave her a lift to her place.
On the road, the traffic was bad despite the fact that it was a Saturday. We were disappointed since we expected to see no traffic at all as weekends were supposed to be that way by Hawaiian standards. At past lunch time, we were finally there in our destination: ALAMOANA HOTEL. I waited and sat by the lobby feeling tired and sleepy.Little Boy checked in. We were deeply exhausted from the long journey from California to Hawaii, with us leaving our place in North Beach at 5:30 A.M. Inside the hotel room, I unpacked everything until all was set in place. The day ended with me taking a short and relaxing hot bath in the tub. There, I felt rejuvenated. In bed while I was starting to fall asleep, Little Boy Blue was still out trying to to buy us some food snacks. Upon his return, I was already snoozing in bed.
In the middle of the night, I woke up suddenly after almost an hour's sleep. Well, the light was on. I saw husband's silhouette as he alighted from our bed. Earlier, he was watching a pirated DVD movie in my PC while eating his popcorn. Golly, it made the aroma in our room to be quite unbearable for me. Gosh, I asked him to please open the sliding door to get rid of that foul odor. After all was taken care of, I went back to sleep and woke up today at 2:00 A.M., writing this journey experience with him and Jeanette. My day has began. Aloha! And greetings from HAWAII!
Travel Ideas
I always have these in my luggage and they are quite useful in fact:
1. NET BAG- I always pack our clothes in net bags. I designate a set for this function: travel in vogue and comfort. The net bag provides a secured space for the ironed clothes to remain neat and intact. Since we are travelling tomorrow to Honolulu, Hawaii I did my packing tonight and made sure all the clothes are zipped in these bags. You'd be amazed with the magic it brings, so try on!
2. "TABO"- Our very own TABO (pronounced as TAH-BO) or "water dipper" in English. For Caucasians and other people from cross-cultural groups who do not know this, have not seen one, is naive about its use~ listen to this: we Filipinos, Japanese and Thais use this to clean our private parts after we peed or pooped. Get that? Hahaha! We use this when there is no bidet in the place we live in, travel to or stay in for the moment. How to use it? First, pour water in the TABO; second, wash your (you know what) with soap and water; third, dry yourself with toilet paper. Voila, you smell like a newborn baby in your mother's arms! Tee-ha.
Ever since LBB (Little Boy Blue) has been accustomed to using this since we got married, he can't travel without this item for his own comfort and sanity as a humanbeing, mind you! So I always make sure that his TABO comes in handy and in his luggage when he is on business trips. Learning to use the TABO and having a new brand of hygiene is what he has learned being married to me who is from Asian heritage (translation: we Filipinos in general are very clean, not only in our homes but in our own make up as people, especially in our southern part (haha)!
3. TRAVEl BIDET-
This is battery operated and works like a mini sprinkler. This is made in Japan. This is a very hi-tech instrument to clean your butt (smile)! To work with this, you need to pour water on the reservoir on the side and then there is a part where you can press it on so the water could come out. It's neat!
This is almost like the bidet in many homes and establishments in Thailand, Japan and the Philippines. This was given to me by husband. He ordered this TRAVEL BIDETonline, shipped from Las Vegas for a good price but it is worth every penny paid for it.
When we traveled internationally last December, it really served us well when had to go to the loo as it brings in hygiene in the utmost level of standards plus of course, when we are clean down there (laughs)we feel at ease and comfortable~ battling the 19-hour journey from east to west. This is all folks. I need to sleep for my 6-hours journey to the Pacific Islands tomorrow. ALOHA!
